Our Story
Would you believe me if I said that Cakes by Lisa happened by accident? That my kids were the driving force behind my vision and have inspired me to make my business what it is today?
In 2008, my sweet daughter Azalea was turning 3. I desperately wanted to make the most special cake. I wanted to see her face light up. I think all moms and parents want to see their children and loved ones faces light up when we are celebrating them. It is my most favorite part of a celebration. Seeing people’s faces light up with joy, happiness, and love. This is my WHY!!
The cake that started it all..
I found the recipe and design in a Good Housekeeping magazine. I searched and searched for the most perfect one. We were a small family of 3 with one on the way and budget was important.
My finished product did the job, her face lit up and she loved it so much…. But it didn't meet my expectations and left me curious about cake.
I am not a classically trained baker, meaning I didn’t go to a culinary school nor have I ever worked in a bakery before starting my own business. I had this building curiosity and I was determined to find answers. I needed to know the science behind cake, the architecture of cake, all things cake. I started researching, and I started following some well-known cake artisans and then I jumped head first because I fell in love with it.
I’m a hands on learner, I started baking, I started to learn how to bake cakes from scratch instead of using the boxed cakes from the store. Boy did I go through some recipes… I started experimenting with different mediums: fondant, gum paste, modeling chocolate, buttercream, royal icing, everything and anything I could do to learn. Friends started to ask me to make cake for them and their children, I, of course, continued to make fun cakes for my kids and husband.
Finally in September 2017, I gave myself “the stamp of approval” to take that leap and start my Cottage Food business. It was scary. I was afraid of what people would think, what they would say, does how I got here matter? I took the big first step and started my path to achieve my dreams. I just kept saying… you can do it and I surrounded myself with people and other like minded business women. My gals… I couldn’t have done it without all your support. 😘
I’ve learned many, many lessons along the way. I’ve crushed some goals that seemed unachievable. I’ve cried over cake, I’ve celebrated over cake, grown as a person, become a stronger business owner and my kids have been able to grow up seeing their mom build something truly amazing.
I consider myself lucky to be a part of bringing people together, celebrating people, and helping them to create the most memorable moments.
❤️ Thank you
